The current trend for conferences

As the 'crunch' bites, thoughts inevitably turn to getting more for less.

I'm off to TestExpo tomorrow. This event has always been proud of its 'free to attend' tag and rightly so. But I hear from my sources that this year's event has seen registered attendees of a higher seniority than usual. Is this the 'crunch' taking affect?

Other notable conferences in the annual testing calendar have either shrunk in size to cut overheads or else offered significant incentives to get people to come along. I wonder if the trend will shortly be to open the doors for free as standard?
(I guess you could invite people to make voluntary contributions based on how well they thought it met their expectations, but that's likely to encourage a touch of Scroogeness even in the most-benevolent of people).

I'll see tomorrow if the claims made are correct, and shall assess the mood of the halls as the market begins to plan for next year's anticipated upturn.
Meanwhile, if the event is suitably uplifting, I may even pop a few peanuts in the hat by way of donation.
